Elegant Appeal The interiors bristle with antiques sourced from all over the world and their elegant appeal is ably complemented by the presence of the hotel’s comfortable library, where books line the floor-to-ceiling shelves and lie in tempting piles on tables – and when the lure of the printed page palls, there are plenty of board games and cards, plus a record player and satellite TV, to enjoy. You can relax with a drink, as you flick idly through the pages of one of the many art or cookery books, or perhaps you’d prefer to sit outside on the terrace, which bursts with flowers and colour in the summer, and on which chairs and tables are arranged around a small fountain and beneath the shade of a vine-covered pergola. In the colder months, the dining and drawing rooms, with their sumptuous velvet chairs, glittering chandeliers, glossy tiled floors, Victorian fireplace and baby grand piano will prove irresistible, being simultaneously cosy and elegant, decadent and welcoming.
Fine Food Before setting off for a lazy day on the beaches of Mylopotamos or Damouhari (where Mamma Mia was filmed!) – both of which are just a fifteen minute drive away – or for a more arduous day of tramping the kalderimia (traditional cobbled paths) which are ever-popular with walkers – you’ll be offered breakfast in either the dining room or on the tranquil terrace, as your tastes, and the weather, dictate. Homemade bread, jam and marmalade are served up alongside silky Greek yoghurt, fresh fruit and cereal, as well as a cooked-to-order full English breakfast. Just be sure to leave room for lunch; Clare and Christos can recommend the best tavernas if you’re venturing out for the day; alternatively The Lost Unicorn itself operates a summer cafe with seating in Agia Paraskevi Square.
Good Company There are a couple of resident cats and a small dog in the hotel, as well as some larger dogs who live in a separate area at the back of the building. Just ask if you’d like to meet them; many previous guests have even enjoyed walking them in the surrounding areas, and they also provide excellent company for joggers on those splendidly scenic runs.
